History/State Records:
First introduced into North America, from Europe, in 1851 in Brooklyn, New York. These few pairs did not survive and about 100 more were imported. Half were released in 1852 with the rest being released the following spring. The rest is history!

The first New Jersey record was from Chatham in 1868 and in 1869 it was first recorded in Philadelphia – these no doubt having been released birds. There is no record of released birds in Delaware, and it is assumed that they voluntarily colonized the state sometime between 1869 and 1886.

Also known as English Sparrow
