Habitat
Coniferous woodlands, preferring soft cones such as hemlock, American larch and spruce

Status and Distribution
Very rare irruption migrant and winter visitor. Irruptions usually begin in late Oct and early November

Range
Breeds from Alaska across southern Canadian.

Best locations
Conifer stands.

History / Records
In NJ major irruptions have occurred in 1899-1900, 1952-53, 1963-64, and 1981-82. One bird was found in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia on July 30, 1972
