DVOC Field Trip Report

September 15, 2013 (Sunday)
Fort Washington State Park

Leader: Jane Henderson

In spite of some confusion regarding meeting date and time, over 20 people turned out for the joint WAS/DVOC autumn walk at Fort Washington State Park. The weather could not have been better, and the birds cooperated. We had excellent looks at 7 warbler species: Blue-winged, Black-and-white, Nashville, Northern Parula, Magnolia, Blackburnian and Black-throated Green. 35 species altogether, including raptors. The only disappointment was the failure of the Eastern Screech Owl to show his face where he had been seen and photographed just the day before. At the conclusion of the walk around the park, many participants joined others at the hawkwatch platform to witness a spectacular Broad-winged Hawk migration. By the end of the day, over 18,000 broadwings had been counted and recorded. Thanks to all who came out.
