CHESTNUT HILL SWIFT ROOST

About 20 people turned up on the evening of September 18 for the Chimney Swift field trip at J.S. Jenks School in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia. It was a beautiful evening for the event. The birds began arriving around 7:00 PM, as predicted. But this year they behaved atypically. Instead of massing and swirling around the chimney until nearly dark, they began dropping in, little by little, around 7:15. By 7:25 the last bird had disappeared inside the chimney. The onlookers clapped, as is customary. We estimate that there were about 1,000 birds this time. We have no explanation for this odd behavior. If anyone does, please let us know. This field trip, for reasons of the field trip leader's schedule, was the latest in the calendar year. Maybe that's an explanation, although the evening before, the 17th, they behaved typically.
