Minutes of the DVOC
April 3, 2014
The Meeting was called to order by President, Philip Witmer at 7:30 PM 4/3/14

Phil Witmer announced that when the Council met in February 2014, it was agreed to change the process by which applicants apply and enter as members of DVOC. A change of by-laws is required to fully implement these changes and this process has begun. The by-law changes are estimated to take 6 months to a year. In the meantime a streamlined process, which is in compliance with the current by-laws will be implemented: On receipt of an application, the applicant’s name will be read at the next meeting. Following an announcement, the application will be submitted to Council. Council need only respond if there is an objection. Barring any objections, after one week, the application will be accepted and the new member will be notified.
Bonnie Witmer announced that an application was received from Matthew Ryan Halley.

The following volunteered to lead walks on Warbler Weekend:
4/19/14 West Laurel Hill Cemetery
The walk will start behind the Brigham Funeral Home at 8:30 AM. Those wishing to arrive early and participate in the scouting walk, meet at 7:30 AM.
Greg noted that the walk continues along the Cynwyd Heritage Trail where the group might see the Peregrine pair nesting in Manayunk, on St. John’s the Baptist Church.

Field Trip/Warbler Weekend:
Friday 4/25/14: Classroom session will begin at 7:00 PM at John Heinz (Tinicum) NWR. Scott Whittle and Tom Stephenson - authors of The Warbler Guide?will be presenting. Contact Person: Steve Kacir?

Saturday 4/26/14: Walk led by Scott Whittle and Tom Stephenson. This guided bird walk puts to practice the tips and skills learned in the evening program. Meet at the Mauricetown Crossway Road Wawa (near the intersection of Route 347 and 47)?Wawa Food Market?3904 New Jersey 47?Dorchester, NJ 08316.?Birding will take place at Belleplain State Forest, NJ?Time: Meet at the Wawa at 6:45 AM.
Sunday 4/27/14 8:00 AM: Warbler Walk inspired by the Friday night program and the Saturday field session. (Tom and Scott will not be present for this walk) ?Hosted by members of Friends of Heinz Refuge (FOHR) and DVOC?
Location: John Heinz (Tinicum) NWR. Walks led by FOHR volunteer Debbie Beer and other DVOC members.
Saturday 4/26/14 Bartram Gardens
Meet at the parking lot at 7:30 AM.

This Spring trip usually begins at Prime Hook and heads north but things could change. Contact leader, Lynn Jackson, prior to the trip to find out the meeting place and time.
Phil Witmer called on Linda Widdop for an announcement regarding
“Return the Favor”, the Delaware Bay Horseshoe Crab rescue project.
Those wishing to volunteer will need to fill out the volunteer survey to acknowledge participation and to learn more facts about the project.
Phil and Linda will lead us on Reed’s Beach on 5/31/14 at 11 PM, the night of a high tide and full moon. It is planned to meet for an informal dinner, searching for owls and rails and then head to the beach for high tide.
Audubon Mill Grove on 4/18/14 5–8 PM will host an opening to the exhibition, “Drawn from Nature”. The exhibit will remain until 4/27/14 and features an installation commemorating the death of the last Passenger Pigeon.
The Lost Bird Project by sculptor Tom McGrain will be exhibited at The Smithsonian Gardens in Washington, DC.
Mike O’Brien announced that Holy Family Home is asking for donations of binoculars, birding books, etc.
Phil Witmer announced that Wyncote Audubon is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Wyncote Bird Club. An event is to be held at Briarbush Nature Center.
Phil Witmer announced a Birds of Paradise exhibit at the Academy
of Natural Sciences of Drexel University 5/3/14 to September 2014.
Tony Croasdale announced that all are invited to join the post-meeting gathering at the Cherry Tavern.
At the suggestion that we announce only significant sightings, only one note was made.
Mike O’Brien reported a Red-tailed Hawk taking an American Robin from a birdfeeder.
Art McMorris announced the winners of the Billings award 2013:
Patty Rehn and Linda Widdop who tied for 1st place. He also introduced Liz Billings
(widow of Bob Billings) and Karen Walters (daughter of Bob Billings).
11 people are signed up for the 2014 Billings Big Year.
Patty and Linda made a presentation on their 2013 Billings Big Year.
Steve Kacir introduced Bert Filemyr who gave the main presentation: Hosting a Wintering Hummingbird”.
