Minutes of the DVOC
December 18, 2014
President Phil Witmer called the meeting to order at 7:31 PM.
27 members and 5 guests were present.

The minutes of the 4 December 2014 meeting were approved as submitted.
Bonnie Witmer announced several new members including Jeffrey Alampi, Jeremy Haag, Don Perelman and Sasha Freeman. Two more names have submitted applications for membership including Robert Horgan and Barb Bassett.
New Bins for New Birders (NB4NB):
Bob Billings Big Year:
Art McMorriss put in a plug for the 2015 Billings Big Year Competition, asking folks to join in and participate. It is just for fun, but there is a $200 award, not to mention bragging rights.
Nominations – slate
Art McMorris announced the slate of nominees for officers of the club that will be voted on at the upcoming elections on January 8th at the meeting in Jenkins Arboretum. Nominees include:
President: Phil Witmer
Vice President: Steve Kacir
Secretary George Armisted
Treasurer: Bert Filemyr
Council: Anne Reeves, Patty Wren
Art asked for nominations from the floor, but none were forthcoming. This marked the final opportunity this year to submit nominations.
George Armistead re-capped the DVOC presence at the Parks Commission hearing on the proposed velodrome to be built in FDR Park. Members present included George Armistead, Barbara Granger, Matt Halley, and Mike McGraw. An article with more information on the proposed project and a summary of the hearing can be found here:
Public comments on the Project 250 plan should be directed to firstname.lastname@example.org by March 1, 2015.
Tony Croasdale announced the upcoming, first ever BirdPhilly (www.birdphilly.org) field trip on January 17th to FDR Park. The goal is to search for waterfowl and other birds.
Steve Kacir spotlighted the upcoming annual meeting which will feature elections and a presentation by Bert Filemyr on the founders of the DVOC.
On January 22nd Paulo Boute will give a talk on “Birding in Brazil”.
Chris Walters reported on the by-laws committee’s recent work updating various by-laws. The bylaws committee consists of Chris Walters, Art McMorris, Paul Guris, and Jeff Holt.
Walters mentioned the updates were uncontroversial and summarized the changes as follows:
1. Streamlining membership process
2. The club must now give advance notice to a member before expelling said member from the club
3. Trustees of the club endowment now have 6-year terms
4. Removed some archaic phrases
5. Renamed the conservation award, so that is now the Rosalie Edge Conservation Award
6. Removed restrictions on the publication dates for Stone Award nominees
Phil Wtmer: Request nominees/volunteers for a new communications committee, to be chaired by Linda Widdop.
Art McMorris mentioned that Ray Hendrick told Art to tell everyone he misses the club, and regrets not being able to make it to meetings anymore, and that he wishes all of us well.
Paul Guris noted upcoming dates for winter pelagics:
Jan. 2nd out of Belmawr, NJ
Jan. 10th out of Freeport, NY,
Jan. 24th out of Cape May, NJ
Jan 31 from Lewes, DE
Phil Witmer suggest the idea of a trip for older members that could use assistance getting around driving and finding birds.
Tony Croasdale invited folks to help lead field trips, and mentioned that Ann Reeves will be doing one to Dredge Spoils in New Jersey.
2014 DVOC Member Photo Contest hosted by Paul Guris
Paul mentioned that 4 donors had generously contributed prizes for the photo contest.
The judges for the contest were:
Andy Curtis, Anita Guris, Steve Kacir.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:57pm. The usual suspects then assembled at Cherry Street Tavern.
