Minutes of the DVOC
January 8, 2015

President Phil Witmer called the meeting to order at 7:41PM.
Total present:
35 members and 3 guests were present. Guests included:

The minutes of the 18 Dec 2014 meeting were approved as submitted.
Phil Witmer called to order the first meeting and the annual meeting of our 125th year, featuring elections, a treasurer’s report and a trustee’s report. He asked members to consider when the first learned of DVOC and what is has meant to them since, and mentioned that there was a lot of club activity at the moment. Included in this is the BirdPhilly initiative, to which Hart & Jewel Rufe challenged club members to raise $1000 in support of BirdPhilly, which they offered to match if that goal is met by February 6th, 2015. The club president asked everyone to consider a contribution in support of this challenge and this initiative.

Art McMorris announced the Nominations Committee’s slate of nominees for club officers, and called for a vote on the following offices”

President - Phil Witmer
Vice President – Steve Kacir
Secretary – George Armistead
Treasurer – Bert Filemyr
Councilors – Ann Reeves and Patty Rehn

A vote was held and it was unanimous in favor of the above candidates.
Art and Phil Witmer expressed gratitude to Win Shafer and Anita Guris for their work on DVOC council, as their terms have just now come to an end.
Phil also noted that Anita Guris will be chairing an adhoc committee assembled to oversee the celebration of the club’s 125th anniversary, set for later this autumn.

Phil Witmer announced that there were no fellows to be announced this year, but that there is a new honorary member that was nominated. By a unanimous vote of the membership Paul A. Guris was elected as an honorary member. Read more about Paul here:

A treasurer’s report was delivered by treasurer Bert Filemyr.

Chris Walters called for a vote on the revisions to the by-laws announced and reviewed at the two previous club meetings. A motion was made and and the revisions were approved by a vote of the members present.

Youth Birding:

Orn Studies:

New Bins for New Birders (NB4NB):
No report.

Bob Billings Big Year:
Art McMorris asked for members to sign up to participate in the 2015 Billings Big Year Competition. So far at least a dozen have signed up. All that’s required is to notify Art by March, and winners win bragging rights plus $200.

Chris Walters announced that the annual Montauk Trip to New York will happen over President’s weekend this coming February.

Trustee’s Report
A trustee’s report was delivered Chris Walters.


Marty Dellwo noted that upcoming on Saturday January 10th, 2015 is the 30th annual Philadelphia Mid-Winter Bird Census, run by Keith Russell of Audubon Pennsylvania.

Matt Halley announced that a paper on which he is a co-author has been accepted to the journal Tropical Ecology, on migration patterns of the Veery.
