May 7, 2015
The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University
President Phil Witmer called the meeting to order at 7:30pm. The minutes from the previous meeting were approved.
Guests: Nicole – new member!
Bonnie Witmer absent. President Phil Witmer reported that Navin Sasikumar, Dennis Miranda, and John Friedman are officially members! Three additional applications have been received – Fred and Susan Shriner (Kennett Square), Nicole Arcilla (Philadelphia)
No report. George Armistead is absent.
Programs (Steve Kacir)
Justin Jawarski will be talking about silent flight in owls.
6/6 – Stonybrook Millstone Watershed Assoc., Pennington, NJ. Walk will focus on riparian species (e.g., Acadian Flycatcher, Veery, etc.)
Trips (Tony Croasdale)
The Wissahickon trip was great, warblers, migrants, etc. Matthew Halley and Tony Croasdale led a birding by ear workshop. Upcoming trips include:
5/9 – West Park @ the Horticultural Center (Bird Philly event)
5/9 – Big Green Hours, Philadelphia Bird Race, etc.
5/16 – Tannersville Cranberry Bog trip
Ridin' Birdy (Tony Croasdale, Matthew Halley, Bull Gervasi) will be competing in the World Series of Birding on May 9.
Phil Witmer: Photo contests are in season: Partnership of the Delaware Estuary, and also Tri-state Bird Rescue & Research, and also Philadelphia Bird Race
Greg Gorton: Bird-a-thon walk at John Heinz NWR, led by Greg at 7am
Matthew Halley: Blackburnian Warbler, Scarlet Tanagers, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, in Wissahickon Park; white pines along Cresheim Creek is a great place to see multiple species of thrushes.
Chris Walter: Sandhill Crane two sundays ago at Maddington Marsh
Linda: Peregrine Falcons on the turnpike bridge have hatched!
Greg: Peregrines at the Manayunk site (St. John the Baptist Church) were out of the nest site for 20 mins or so. The nest is presumed to have hatched. On the Cynwyd Heritage Trail, Greg saw a blackbird giving a “chit-chit” that sounded like an orchard oriole. Susan saw an Orchard Oriole in Woodlands cemetery, and last night she heard a Parula warbler.
Dave Long: New issue (74/75), covering the period 2010-2013, is hot off the press!

Jason Weckstein gave a presentation entitled: “An Ornithological Expedition To The Most Endangered Amazonian Area Of Endemism: The Belem Center Of Endemism.” Jason is the new Associate Curator of birds at the Academy of Natural Sciences and a DVOC member. The talk highlighted the ornithological treasures of (and harrowing journey required to reach) the infrequently visited Belem area of Brazil.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:13pm.
