Minutes of the DVOC
October 1, 2015

The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University
Vice President Steve Kacir called the meeting to order at 7:31 PM.

Total present:
25 members and 1 guest were present.

Committee Reports

Steve Kacir announced that an application has been received from Fred Lambert.

Dave Long announced that he will need a new Photo Editor for the next Cassinia.

125th Anniversary Committee
Barbara Granger reported that over 100 people have signed up for the Anniversary Gala to be held on October 10th. The committee has one ticket available for a member that may not have the means to attend. Please contact Anita Guris.

Youth Birding:

Orni Studies:

New Bins for New Birders (NB4NB):
No report.

Bob Billings Big Year:
No report.

Field Trips:
Bob Horton asked Navin Sasikuman to give a report on the field trip to Sedgley Woods in Philadelphia. Navin reported that the birding was very slow with only a few resident birds seen.
Bob noted that upcoming field trips are scheduled to Wissahickon Environmental Center on October 3rd, and Delaware River Trail on October 10th

Steve Kacir noted the upcoming 125th Anniversary Gala will be on October 10th in the Dinosaur Hall at the Academy. Pat and Clay Sutton will be our speakers, discussing the History of the DVOC. Steve also mentioned that the speaker at the following meeting on October 15th will be Gregory George. Greg’s topic will be “The Cerulean Warbler, a Migrant in Decline, Population Status and Conservation in Eastern Pennsylvania”. Steve also announced that the speaker for the November 5th meeting will be Artist Kate Garchinski. She will present “In living color: The Passenger Pigeon and the Carolina Parakeet”. There will be no meeting on November 19th.

Steve Kacir announced that the deadline for the Photo Contest is October 21st. He encourages all members to submit photos. The judges this year will be Marty Dellwo, Patty Rehn and Steve Mattan.
Mike O’Brien recommended a source for native plants; Prairie Moon Nursery
Steve noted that the club has received a letter from Pennsylvania Audubon thanking us for our $1000 donation.

Local Notes
Katrina Rakowski reported some good sightings on the Temple University campus, including Black-throated Blue Warblers, Northern Parula, Scarlet Tanagers and Ovenbirds. Bert Filemyr noted there have been reports of an Anhinga at Tinicum in the past few days although he had not been successful in seeing it. He said an Anhinga had also been reported from the Militia Hill Hawk Watch about two weeks ago.
