Each year DVOC pledges support to a local conservation project. The major source of our conservation funds is the monies raised by pledges and donations related to our record-setting World Series of Birding (WSB) team, the Nikon/DVOC Lagerhead Shrikes. DVOC also welcomes additional monetary donations to help us further our conservation efforts.

This year, 2008, DVOC is thrilled to support the Saw-Whet Owl Banding Project on the Kittatiny Mountain Ridge, headed by Scott Weidensaul and run through the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art in Dauphin County, PA. The project operates with over 100 volunteers contributing 6,000 person-hours per year, banding approximately 200-900 Saw-Whets each season. 2008 will be the 12th year of banding on a “shoestring” budget, and they are grateful for DVOC’s support.

In addition, conservation funds raised by the WSB will support a second ornithological intern at the Academy of Natural Sciences. In 2007 DVOC funded a summer internship program at the Academy’s Ornithological department. The program was so successful that we decided to dedicate some conservation funds this year to support a second intern.

Last but not least, DVOC will support banders Tom Bailey and Hannah Struthers by purchasing mist nets with WSB conservation monies.

The Nikon / DVOC Lagerhead Shrikes team members are experts in the game of “hit and run” birding. Seven times in the twenty-three years of the competition a DVOC team has won the grand prize - the Urner Stone Cup (highest total species identified).

The Lagerhead Shrikes do their part; now it is YOUR turn. In order to support these worthy conservation projects, we need everyone’s support in the form of pledges and contributions. All checks should be made payable to the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC) and mailed to our Treasurer at:
