“ I started birding as a teenager when my father showed me an Osprey nest sitting on top of a telephone poll during a summer vacation at the shore. I’ve been hooked ever since. I would, however, have classified myself as a casual birder up until the last few years. In 2006 I read an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer about a new deck at the Militia Hill Hawkwatch and on Halloween day decided to visit. There I met Marylea Klauder the founder of the hawkwatch, along with some of the other compilers. This was their last day that year but being there rekindled my interest in birding and the following year I spent hundreds of hours with Marylea at the hawkwatch helping out. During the 2007 season I met Bert Filemyr and Connie Goldman at Militia Hill and with their help and the help of others improved my raptor identification skills. I now volunteer as a compiler at Militia Hill. Later that year I volunteered for my first Christmas Bird Count and was introduced to Edie Parnum who became a mentor to me in 2008 and taught me more than I ever wanted to know about shorebirds and bird songs. She took me to my first DVOC meeting and also introduced me to a lot of her birding friends and invited me along on their weekday birding trips. Later that year I was invited by Bert and Connie on one of their weekday trips and have been going with all three ever since. With the help and encouragement of Edie, Bert and Connie I have become a better birder and hope to continue learning through a long association with DVOC and its many members.” From Mike's 2008 application |
