I began my birding "career" with a day trip around Brigantine, now the Edwin B. Forsythe, National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) with my brother and veteran birder, Hart Rufe, on the Saturday of Easter weekend in 1973. The proverbial “bug” had taken a big bite! Birding became a logical extension of a lifelong love of the outdoors, and another of many ways to add to the enjoyment of hiking, hunting and fishing and touring.”
In the ensuing years I have birded across the country and around the world, maintaining bird lists for ABA North America of 699 species, and a Delaware State List of 352. “I keep these two lists more as a matter of habit and discipline than friendly competition, and the lists’ growth is more a matter of time in the field and companionship on trips than of birding expertise.”
I have particularly enjoyed extended trips taken with DVOC, DOS and other bird clubs such as Bucks County Audubon over the years, as well as a few professionally led tours. Some of my favorite destinations included excursions to Texas, California, Florida, Nevada, Hawaii and Alaska, as well as less arduous junkets locally and internationally. I have also had the opportunity to bird in the UK and several European countries, Morrocco, Korea, New Zealand, Australia, Trinidad and most recently, Belize.

Bob is serving the second year in his second term as President of the Delmarva Ornithological Society, only the second individual in DOS to have served two full terms.
