Grant is a self-described amateur ornithologist and raptor biologist. His interests include demography, conservation, behavioral ecology, human ecology, and sustainability. Involved in the Social Concerns Commitee of his Quaker meeting. He got started in birding since a bird course, "Biology of Birds" with Dr. Dan Klem, Jr. at Muhlenburg College. Grant has been birding for 14 years, mostly in the Lehigh Valley and vicinity; is a hawk watcher; he keeps Grinnell system annual and species accounts, and at bird feeder sporadically.
