2007 Academy of Natural Sciences Interns - Sponsored by the DVOC
Early in 2007, the DVOC Council was presented with a recommendation by the Conservation Commmittee concerning the use of funds generated by our World Series of Birding Team. The Council agreed to the recommendation to support not one, but two, summer interns this year at the Bird Department of the Academy of Natural Sciences. These interns worked under the direction of Dr. Nate Rice, Collections Manager and member of DVOC.
Much of these interns’ work revolved around working on the specimen database, particularly with the frozen tissue collection. Work on the type specimen collection and retrospective capture of collection data was also a significant part of each intern's experience. Interns received lessons in taxidermy and avian anatomy at least one day each week. As needed, the interns will helped to process and pack loans of specimens to other institutions.
