Suggested Birding Locations for January
Shark River, NJ – best for waterfowl when it is very cold as it is the last refugee to freeze (if we get a real winter). Eurasian Wigeon, gulls, and possible alcids and loons at the mouth Sandy Hook, NJ – Razorbills, and some of the uncommon and rarer waterfowl are possible. The hollies, deciduous woods and shrubs that line the drive in are always worth checking for any wintering passerines or strays such as Bohemian Waxwings. Bombay Hook, DE – an impressive 30,000 Snow Geese and handful of Tundra Swans blanket the impoundments.
