Field Trip Report
Roosevelt
Park
December 14, 2003
We
had only three participants for the trip but given the forbidding weather forecast
it was uncertain whether anyone would show up at all. Fortunately the snow that
was predicted to have started by sunrise did not begin falling heavily until
8:40, by which time we had been birding for 40 minutes and observed 32 species.
We did have good close looks at dabblers, including numbers of Coot, Wigeon,
Gadwall, and Shovelers, and we had three waders including Black-crowned Night-Heron,
Great Egret, and many Great Blues. One other nice find was a juvenile Snow Goose.
We had just started serious land birding when the snow became so intense that
we were forced to quit. Everyone enjoyed the time we spent however and we would
have certainly seen much more if the snow had held off a little longer.
