BARNEGAT BAY AND BARNEGAT LIGHT, New Jersey

Including 8 teenagers from the Upper Main Line YMCA, a gaggle of 15 of us met at the Barnegat Lighthouse on Long Beach Island, NJ for this trip. Highlights were 38 Harlequin Ducks (10 yards away) and an all-white first-year Glaucous Gull, plus a perched female Rough-legged Hawk later at Manahawkin. For variety, we even spotted a migrating phoebe. The Purple Sandpipers, Gannet, Long-tailed (Oldsquaw) Ducks, Great Cormorant, Common Goldeneye, and Red-throated Loons were life birds for some of the younger birders. The Y's field director was extremely complimentary of the patience and leadership skills of Paul Guris, who saw to it that a great time was had by all.
