DVOC Field Trip Report

March 11, 2007
Barnegat, New Jersey
Lead by Frank Windfelder and Chris Walters
Attending were Brian Raicich, Sally Leathersich, Brian Quindlin, and Cindy Ahern, plus about a dozen high school birders, some from the Upper Main Line YMCA (UMLY), and others who came with Cindy. We all enjoyed a beautiful sunny day in the mid-50’s.
Strongly in evidence off
the Barnegat jetty were 30+ Harlequins, some 200 Purple Sandpipers, several
dozen Common Loons, one Red-throated Loon, hundreds of Long-tailed Ducks (Oldsquaw),
Surf and White-winged Scoters, Great Cormorant, Bonaparte’s Gull, Oystercatchers,
and Ruddy Turnstones. Horned Grebe, Red-breasted Mergansers and (yes) Yellow-rumped
Warblers rounded out the picture. The 80+ Common Elders present there earlier
in the winter were apparently now all gone – doubtless edging north as
the spring approaches. All in all, the group had a great trip.
