DVOC Field Trip Report

Carpenter's Woods

This year's Carpenter's Woods field trip began at 6:30 AM on Sunday 5/20 with a single participant, then later recruited two more for a grand total of three, plus your leader. The overnight rain had stopped but the morning was cool and overcast.

In keeping with expectations, things were pretty low-key. We saw 11 warbler species, including excellent looks at a very cooperative Canada Warbler, and an unusually late Yellow-rumped. We discovered a Red-eyed Vireo on nest and watched two Northern Flicker males, circling down the same trunk and trying to knock each other off the tree. Very handsome Baltimore Orioles, a Rose-breasted Grosbeak and a singing Scarlet Tanager also put in appearances. One of our participants was a young neighborhood birder (about age 12?) and we did our best to sign him up for the DVOC.
