Riverwinds and National Park Dredge Spoils
April 22, 2007

Welcome spring weather greeted the group at the Riverwinds trailhead on Sunday, April 22. Unfortunately, the recent biblical rains had flooded a portion of the trail, forcing us walk halfway around the loop & then back track to the parking lot. After a slow start, the birding picked up with excellent looks at Pine, Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers, Blue-headed Vireo, Hermit Thrush and Brown Thrasher. Northern Bobwhite, a resident breeder, were extremely vocal. The marsh on the backside held an aubndance of Green-winged Teal. From the trail, we drove to the nearby retention ponds where we added Blue -winged Teal and Bufflehead. From here, we were also able to put a scope of the distant Mantua Creek Bald Eagle pair.

From Riverwinds, we drove to the National Park Dredge Spoils, where a scan of the marsh from the dike provided us with American Coot, Common Moorhen and a Wilson's Snipe.
