John Hienz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum, PA

I had noticed that water levels were ideal for shorebirds at John Heinz NWR at Tinicum, so I decided to run an impromptu field trip there. It turned out to be a really great day. There were many participants, including Chris Walters, Adrian Binns, Hank Hox, Verne Lee, Bob Horton, Sam Perloff, Alice Sevareid, JoAnn Raine, Kathy Klesman, Joyce Deibert, and Tony, Tyler and Leigh McDonald.

Perhaps our best birds were a group of 6 breeding-plumaged Stilt Sandpipers and a lone White-rumped Sandpiper. We had numbers of Pectoral Sandpipers and Semipalmated Plovers. There were approximately 800 Least Sandpipers and 250 Semipalmated Sandpipers.

While there, we also got good looks at two different immature Bald Eagles. There were at least 120 Great Egrets. It was hot, but it was worth it!
