DVOC Field Trip Report
by Chris Walters
January 16-18, 2010
This is the Montauk Field Trip Report for January 16-18, 2010, with highlights of KING EIDER, WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, KITTIWAKE, BLACK-HEADED GULL, CACKLING GEESE, RAZORBILLS, EURASIAN WIDGEON, and REDHEADS.
A dozen DVOCers enjoyed mild weather conditions as they worked Long Island’s inlets, ponds, and beaches, hitting and missing target birds on both shores of the island. In keeping with the trends of this winter’s CBCs, the species total (88) was on the low side with few passerines in evidence. And no irruptive species at all. We stayed on Shelter Island in a rented B&B and private home. Despite early engine troubles, a robust route was followed:
FIRST DAY: Owl’s Head Park, Gravesend Bay, and Marine Park (all in Brooklyn), Point Lookout, its CITGO Gas Station, Jones Beach, and Massapeaqua Preserve.
SECOND DAY: Montauk Point, Ditch Plains, Montauk Harbor Inlet, Culloden Point, Tuthill Pond area, Further Lane (Easthampton), Shinnecock Inlet and dunes.
THIRD DAY: Short’s Pond, Riverhead, Grumman grasslands,
Swan Pond (E. Islip), Capri Lake (W. Babylon), Bayville and Shu Shu Swamp (north
shore west of Oyster Bay).
