Delaware City, Delaware
Our party of six, including new birder Phil, scanned the Delaware River for anything but gulls and, save a D-c Cormorant, came up blank. However, Dragon Run Park afforded great views of 8 duck species and a flyover of 4 Mute Swans (2 ad, 2 1st yr) - not too common in New Castle Co. Bald Eagles, Coot, Kingfisher were added before we moved onto the compulsory walk around the rather devastated Fort Dupont State Park. Best here were Fox Sparrow, Towhees and a perched male Sharp-shinned Hawk. After a couple of Black Vultures perched on a black house, we went over the canal via the soon-to-closed-for-six-months Reedy Point Bridge and found 3 Pied-billed Grebes in 1000-acre Marsh and a pair of Peregrines under the bridge. Some participants were more taken with the Military Police maneuvers across the C&D Canal which included live mortar shells (see photos attached). A fun morning in a cool wind with 47 species.
