Minutes of the DVOC Meeting for February 1 , 2001
meeting was called to order by President Ron French.
62 members and 4 guests were present.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved with 1 correction.
Bill Haber was approved for membership.
Sandy Sherman & Keith Russell nominated Andrew Ingersoll for membership in the club.
There were no reports from Archives, Conservation, Cassinia, Larus or Field Trips.
Chuck Hetzel announced that the new bird skin cabinets for the Academy's collections would be arriving shortly. Nate Rice will be at the next meeting looking for volunteers to help with the transfer.
Colin Campbell announced the following up-coming programs:
will be the book auction.
Bob Mercer is looking for people to help with the set up.
3/1 will be Gary Stiles on "Hummingbirds & Flowers"
3/15 will be Donald Edelstein on "Bird Songing"
April will have Shawneen Finnegan
May will have Leo Joseph
June will have Pete Bacinski
Paul Guris reported that 20 spaces are still available on the March 4th Pelagic out of Cape May.
Debbie Carr announced that there will be a Bio-Blitz during the 3rd week in April, sponsored by Fairmount Park. This year the teams will be exploring Cobbs Creek Park. Anyone interested in helping can contact Debbie at 215-685-9285 or call the Andorra Treehouse.
Local (and not so local) Notes:
Bill Haber had a Clay-colored Sparrow at Peace Valley and a Brown Thrasher at Sailor's Point.
Chris Walters described his trip north last weekend with club members Sandy Sherman, Erica Brendel and Frank Windfelder. The trip to Amherst Island, Blessington, Bracebridge & Algonquin Park covered 1525 miles and saw an awesome collection of birds including: Boreal, Saw-whet, Long-eared, Gray Gray and No. Hawk-Owl, No. Shrike, Glaucous Gull, Bohemian Waxwings, White-winged Crossbills, Gray Jay, Spruce Grouse, Evening Grosbeaks, Pine Grosbeaks and Boreal Chickadees.
Roy Frock reported that Manitoba had sponsored a "Great Gray Cup" for the highest number of Great Gray Owls spotted in one day the winning team reported 101 owls.
Arthur McMorris is back from a business trip to Colorado where, despite dipping out on Bohemian Waxwings and White-tailed Ptarmigan, he had 2 male and 3 female Three-toed Woodpeckers. He also heard a Boreal Owl.
Chuck Hetzel had Chipping Sparrow & White Crowned Sparrows at SCEE's farm in Roxborough and Western Willet at Stone Harbor.
Alan Brady had a female Barrow's Goldeneye in with a flock of Common Goldeneye on the DE River at Philips Mills. Commenting on the current northern owl invasion, he reported on a trip he took many years ago to Amherst Island where he had 28 Great Gray Owls and blew off the opportunity to see 25 more.
Dave Long reported that a Sandhill Crane has been at Veteran's Park in Hammonton, NJ for 2 weeks.
Ron French reported Clay Colored Sparrow at the North Lookout at Peace Valley. He noted that it has been frequenting a feeder on Old Limekiln Rd.
Bill Murphy is just back from a trip to the SW Deserts (San Diego to SE Arizona) where he had 252 species including Nuttings Flycatcher, Rufous-backed Robin and Ruddy Ground-dove
DVOC Sweatshirts are now available. Joe Majden has 3 colors (blue, hunter green and heather). Cost is $25.
Doug Weschler presented a program on two trips to Borneo that included slides of many seldom photographed birds.
