Minutes of the DVOC for November 1, 2001

The meeting was called to order by president Ron French.
The minutes of the Oct. 18th meeting were read and approved.
56 members and 1 guest were present.


Nominations:
Working on the theory of "better late than never", Dave Long's membership letter from last May was finally given a second reading and approved.


Committee Reports:
No reports from: Archives, Cassinia, Ornithological Studies, Conservation or the Nominations Committee.

Larus:
Jane Henderson announced that the next issue would be the Christmas count issue.

Field trips:
Based on the weather forecast for this weekend, Frank Windfelder has decided to change the Bake Oven Knob trip to Sunday, 11/4.

Paul Guris announced the upcoming 12/1 Pelagic trip aboard the Atlantis out of Brielle.


Programs:
Colin Campbell announced the following programs:
11/15 ..the Annual Banquet with Bill Murphy, author of " A Guide to the Birds of
Trinidad & Tobago"
12/6….Doug Tallamy of the U. of DE on "Alien Plants"
12/20…..the Annual "Memorable Moments in Birding"


Banquet: Ron French reminded people to get in their reservations for our upcoming banquet being held this year at Williamson's on City Line Ave.


Announcements:
Jan Gordon announced that Bob Ridgely would be leading a trip for the R.A.R.E. Center to 3 of its sanctuaries in Belize and Honduras. The 9 day trip will run from 12/7 - 12/16. See Jan for information.

Chris Walters announced that the upcoming Montauk trip will be in February (President's Weekend) rather than the usual January (Martin Luther King weekend)

Sandy Sherman announced the death of DVOC member Hank Hallowell.


Local Notes:
Jane Henderson had 2 Purple Finches at her feeders in Flourtown last Sunday.

Anita Guris reported an immature Red-headed Woodpecker at her house in Green Lane on Tuesday as well as Purple Finch.

Al Driscoll had 4 Winter Wren in 3 locations in Moorestown and wondered if others were also seeing them as well. Ron French responded that he's had them in Bucks Co. and Chris Walters had one in Center City Phila. Erica Brendel found one in Mt Airy trying to escape a local cat.

Joanne Rayne had a good day in Palmyra last Wednesday with 2 Winter Wren, 2 Fox Sparrows, 2 immature White-crowned Sparrows, plus Field Sparrows, 2 Hermit Thrush and Palm Warblers. She also noticed a lot of road digging around the impoundment and wondered if they were planning to use the area for dredge spoils from the river.

Sandy Sherman reported that the Cape May Autumn Weekend had lots of raptors including the first Swainson's Hawk of the season. Also found were Ash-throated Flycatcher, 1 Black-chinned Hummingbird and a Vesper's Sparrow.

Steve Kerr spent Sunday at Sandy Hook and had 8 White-winged Crossbills, 5 Purple Finch, Brown Creeper, 30+ Hermit Thrush, Pine Siskins, Grasshopper Sparrow and Orange-crowned Warbler.

Per Ron French, Frank Spitzer reported Evening Grosbeak at Washington Crossing.

Per Sandy Sherman, Nick Pulcinella had flyover Red Crossbills in Chester Co.,

Andy Ednie, reporting for the hotline, noted a Redpoll was coming to a feeder in Chester Co., Evening Grosbeak were at Ashland Nature Center and Purple finch were at White Clay Creek. Broadkill Beach had at least 3 Ross' Geese in with the flocks of Snow Geese. He also noted that he managed to work some birding into an anniversary outing with his wife when he spotted a Loggerhead Shrike in New Castle Co.

While looking for a Red Phalarope reported at PVNC by Ray Hendrick, Ron French found a Pectoral Sandpiper.


Evening Program:
Colin Campbell then introduced and led off the Annual Member's slide show.
7 members showed their slides.
