Minutes of the DVOC
October 21, 2010

President Frank Windfelder called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM. Twenty-eight members and four guests were present. The minutes of the September 16th meeting were accepted as submitted.


Jeff Wahl’s application was read to the membership.

Chair Phil Witmer reported that attempts are being made to establish a baseline of bird population at Haverford State Hospital.

Field Trips:
Chair Win Shafer conducted the trip reports and announcements:

Trip Reports:

Oct. 10 Tuckerton Marsh, NJ for Sharp-tailed Sparrows. Frank Windfelder reported on the success of his trip to Tuckerton.

Oct. 16 Ashland Nature Center, DE. Dino Fiabane reported on the trip Colin Campbell led to Ashland.

Trip Announcements:

Oct. 24 John Heinz NWR at Tinicum, PA. This trip will search for early waterfowl and late passerine and shorebird migrants, as well as local residents.
Meet in Tinicum's parking lot at 8:00 AM. The leader is Denis Brennan.

Oct 30 Bake Oven Knob, PA. For raptors and possible Golden Eagle and Goshawk. A decision on which day should have the best conditions will be made the week prior. Meet at parking lot at 8:30 AM and bring lunch. The Leaders are Frank Windfelder and Chris Walters.

Nov. 6 Saw-whet Owl Banding at Hidden Valley, PA. This trip to Scott Weidensaul’s Saw-whet Owl banding project will be led by Debbie Beer. The number of participants is limited. Please contact Debbie if you are interested.


Dino Fiabane announced the upcoming Ornithological Studies:

November 4: Debbie Beer will present “The Secret Lives of Saw-Whets”

December 2. Don Jones will present “Vocal Differences between the Recent Splits Announced by AOU.”

Art McMorris announced the upcoming programs:

On Nov. 4 – Todd Katzner will present “Golden Eagles and Wind Energy: Siting Wind Power for Improved Conservation Management”

Nov. 18 is our Annual Banquet. Scott Weidensaul will present “Messing around with birds (for fun and science)”

Dec. 16 is our annual members photo night competition.


Witmer Stone Sanctuary: currently part of Cape May Point State Park; working on getting it renamed; permission for signs has been granted (currently in 3rd revision).

Bob Billings Big Year Award: Art McMorris reported that an annual prize will be given to the club member who sees the most birds each year; guidelines (DVOC members only; limited to the area of the DVOC checklist; list of counties in PA, NJ, DE to follow; prize $200) fund raising (Hart Rufe has established a challenge).

Frank Windfelder reported that the City of Philadelphia (the mayor) wanted farm plots at Manatawna Farms. He also reported that a bill has passed through a Council Committee to prevent those community gardens, and that there will be a council vote on the bill soon.

Yoav Chudnoff is planning a trip next year to Bulgaria in June 2011 to help fund a biodiversity project www.firendsofbspb.org

Phil Witmer announced he will be speaking at Bucks County Audubon on Nov. 11.

Local Notes:

Paul Guris reported Rufus/Allen’s Hummingbird, Purple Finches and Black-capped Chickadees at his home in Green Lane, PA.

Phil Witmer reported it is turning out to be a good year for Saw-Whets.

Martin Dellwo attended big sit at Tinicum.

Ornithological Studies:

Dino Fiabane introduced John Tramontano, who presented “Wing Beat and Flight Patterns Useful in Avian ID”

Main Program:
Louise Zemaitis presented “Birds and Habitat”


The meeting was adjourned at 9:20 PM with the Phillies up 3-1.
