Minutes of the DVOC
January 20, 2011

President Frank Windfelder called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM. Twenty-eight members and three guests were present.

Frank announced that we would change the format of the meeting and have the Main Program presented first, followed by the general meeting items and the Ornithological Studies. This is being done to accommodate our speaker, who must drive back to north-central Pennsylvania in the growing snowstorm tonight.

The minutes of the January 6th meeting were approved as submitted.

Main Program:
Vice President Art McMorris introduced tonight’s speaker, Doug Gross. Doug presented “Pennsylvania’s Boreal Forest Birds.”

Local Notes:
Marty Dellwo reported a Redhead as well as White-crowned Sparrow and Tree Sparrow at Struble Lake in Chester County, PA.
Linda Rowan reported seeing a Bald Eagle flying in the vicinity of Burlington Island in the Delaware River.

Announcements:
Yoav Chudnoff announced that the Friends of Bulgarian Society for Protection of Birds is sponsoring a Raffle to support the Sinemoretz Biodiversity Project.
1st Prize: Alpen Optics' Teton '84' Professional Birding Binoculars.
2nd Prize: Official BSPB T-Shirt.
All funds are to be used towards the Biodiversity Project.
The drawing will be held at a DVOC meeting in May.
New member, Judy Stepenaskie introduced a conservation topic. She commented that Philadelphia has a Zoning Code Commission and she suggested to members that they may want to provide comments on bird safe-glass to this commission.

Steve Kacir introduces Phil Witmer, who presented “A Conservation Conversation”.

Art McMorris announced that an application has been received from Bob Wallis, of Audubon, PA.

Programs:
On February 3, Kevin Loughlin will present “Belize Birding Bonanza.”
On February 17, George Armistead will present “PORNithology: the Birds and the Birds and the Bees.”
On March 3, Paulo Boute will present “Birdwatching in Central West Brazil - A True Bird Paradise!”

Field Trips:
Chair Win Shafer conducted the trip reports and announcements:
Trip Reports:
Jan 15 – 17 Montauk, Long Island, NY. Erica Brendel reported that 97 species were seen on this recent trip, including a Varied Thrush in Central Park, New York City, Northern Shrike, Glaucous Gull, Lapland Longspur, and American Bittern. Everyone enjoyed the excellent food prepared by Vincent Nichnadowicz.

Trip Announcements:
January 22 Cape May NJ for seabirds and wintering waterfowl. Trip leader is Martin Selzer.
January 23 Cumberland and Cape May Counties, NJ. Search for the Sandhill Crane flock at Husted Landing and work our way down the bay shore towards Cape May, ending at Jake’s Landing for Short-eared Owls. Trip leader is Tony Croasdale.
January 29 Conowingo Dam, MD and Perryville, PA. Birding the Conowingo Dam area where there is a concentration of Bald Eagles at this time of the year, and then search for wintering waterfowl at Perryville. Trip leader is Tom Reeves.
