Greater Spotted Woodpecker Behavior

The two pictures below were taken by my friend Bernd Eggert in Northern Germany. They show a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker's (Picoides minor) nesting cavity, opened from the side by a Greater Spotted Woodpecker (P. major), who most probably ate the Lesser Spotted babies! This behaviour is well known! Do you know if any American Woodpeckers do that as well?
