Neck

Continuous black down the back of the neck and onto the mantle

White between the black head and mantle. Some immature and 1st year non-breeding show a continuous gray or dusky wash down the hindneck and onto the back

 

Head

In particular in females is very much darker (black)

Tend to show a very white head

 

Auriculars

Show a strong white eye patch surrounded by black auriculars

No eye patch, just a dark auricular
