Meeting Location (Directions prepared by Emmerson Bowes)
Meetings are held in the Academy of Natural Sciences, 19th Street and The Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia. Evening entrance is from 19th Street and a security guard requires you to sign in.
If you are driving to the meeting, the securest parking place is Logan Square Parking Garage, 1815 Cherry Street. This indoor, patrolled lot is between 18th and 19th Streets with entrance onto Cherry Street less than 100 yards from the Academy entrance. Bring your parking ticket to the security guard at the Academy for validation to get a discount.
From Southern New Jersey
- Cross the Walt Whitman bridge and go North on 95, for approx. 3 miles.
- Take 676 West, and get in the right hand lane.
-Take the Museums exit after Broad Street, and follow the ramp to the Street, turn right, and then first right again on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
- Follow the Logan Circle around staying to the right on to Race St. Pass the Four Seasons entrance and turn sharp right at the light onto Cherry St. to stop sign, cross 18th St. and enter the Logan Sq. parking garage on the left.½ way down the block.From North on I95
- Leave on Centre City exit, stay to left on to 676 West, and get in the right hand lane.
- Take the Museums exit after Broad Street, and follow the ramp to 23rd Street, turn right, and then first right again on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
- Follow the Logan Circle around staying to the right on to Race St. Pass the Four Seasons entrance and turn sharp right at the light onto Cherry St. to stop sign, cross 18th St. and enter the Logan Square parking garage on the left.½ way down the block. - Stay to the right and take the 1st exit (Ben Franklin Parkway and 23rd Street)
- At the bottom of the ramp continue straight on Ben Franklin Parkway and go across Logan Circle (the Academy is actually at Logan Circle & 19th Street) to the light at Cherry Street and turn right onto Cherry Street. This turn is about four tenths of a mile after you turn onto Ben Franklin Parkway. As of 4/09 there is no sign at the Cherry Street intersection. Mace's Crossing Pub is at the corner where you turn
You will come to a stop sign (at 18th Street). The Four Seasons Hotel will be on the corner to your right. Members, guests and other interested parties are invited to gather at the City Garden Chinese Restaurant, 1801 JFK Blvd (on corner) about 6 pm prior to meetings. Often the guest speaker(s) will be be attending this informal get together.

Field Trip Locations
Tinicum (John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum), PA
The John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center is located in Philadelphia one mile, as the crow flies, north of the Philadelphia International Airport.
From the South:
Traveling on I-95 North, take Exit 10, Rt. 291
At first traffic light, turn Left onto Bartram Ave.
Follow Bartram Ave 1.6 miles to first Left onto 84th Street.
At second traffic light, about 0.5 miles, turn Left onto Lindbergh Blvd.
Proceed to refuge entrance sign
From the North:
Traveling on I-95 South, take Exit 14, Bartram Ave.
At the bottom of the ramp, go straight onto Bartram Ave.
At the fourth light, turn Right onto 84th Street.
Proceed 0.5 miles to Lindbergh Blvd, as above.
From I-76, the Schuylkill Expressway:
Traveling on I-76 East stay in left lanes after crossing the Schuylkill River and follow signs for Rt. 291 West / I-95 South / Airport.
After passing a tank farm on your right, turn Right onto Rt. 291 West.
Follow signs to I-95 South.
Traveling on I-95 South, follow directions "From the North".
From I-476, (The Blue Route):
Traveling on I-476 toward Chester, stay in Left lanes after passing Exit 1 on I-476.
Follow signs for I-95 North toward Philadelphia and Airport.
Follow directions, "From the South".
From Allentown Pa. take Rte 309 North.
At Tripoli, junction of 309 and 143 drive North on 309 for 1.8 miles.
Turn Right (east) on service road 4050 which is marked Mountain Road and continue for 2 miles.
Turn left on Ulrich Road, continue on paved road for 0.25 mile. Do not turn when road goes sharply right but drive straight ahead onto dirt and gravel rough road.
Proceed to the top of the mountain and turn into the game lands parking lot on the right. The North and South Hawk watch sites are at the back of the parking lot, a 6 foot wide path marked by white blazes on the trees signifying the Appalachian Trail.Alternate Directions:
Take 309 North to Germansville.
Look for Bake Oven Knob Road - it's right in Germansville. Make a Right.
Follow this road all the way to top to the parking lot, which is on the Right.

In PA, take Route 309 north past Allentown. Alternately, take the NE Extension of the PA. Turnpike to exit 56. Go east on Route 22 for a short distance, then north on 309 as above.
Continue on 309 north to a fork in the road at Route 873. Bear left in order to stay on 309. Continue on Route 309 for about 4.5 miles to the town of Pleasant Corners.
Turn right at a sign for Germansville. This should be marked as Bake Oven Knob Road. Follow this road as it winds its way around for about 4 miles. When you come to a T-intersection, make a left.
In a short distance, you will see a sign for Walter Rd. Bear right and head up the mountain to the parking lot at the top.
Alternate Directions:
Bake Oven Knob on the Appalachian Trail: From Allentown Pa. take Route 309 north. At Tripoli, the junction of Routes 309 and 143, drive north on 309 for 1.8 miles. Turn right (east) on service road 4050 which is marked Mountain Road and continue for 2 miles.

From I-195, head east to Rte 34 (Exit #35/Brielle). Head South on Rte 34 for about 3 miles then it turns into Rte 35. Stay on Rte 35S for another 1 ½ miles through Brielle and proceed over the Manasquan River bridge (you are now in the town of Point Pleasant Beach). Get in the left lane. You want to go left onto Broadway (which is the first left after the bridge), but can't do so without first going beyond the Dunkin Donuts and taking the first left, which puts you onto Hawthorne Ave (heading North). Get into the right lane immediately and turn right onto Broadway. You'll go about ½ a mile and come to a stop sign at the intersection of Ocean Ave. Continue on Broadway for 100 yards where it dead ends. Park on either side of the road, then walk out towards the beach and bare left to the dike that forms the south side of the Manasquan Inlet.

Palmyra Cove Nature Center (aka The Bailey Tract), NJ
From New Jersey
Take Rt. 73 north to the last traffic light before the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge. Make a right at the light. Make your second left and follow the road until you see the Palmyra Cove sign on the right. Make a right and follow the road around to the entrance underneath the bridge.From Pennsylvania

From Philadelphia:
Take Northeast Turnpike Extension to the Lehigh Valley Exit, #56. Go west on Rte 22 which becomes I-78, towards Harrisburg. Take Exit 35 / Lenhartsville and go north on Rte 143 for about 4 miles. Turn left on Hawk Mountain Road (sign posted Hawk Mountain and there is a gas station on the right corner). Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is at the top of the mountain - about 7 miles.
From points East:
Take I-78 west (towards Harrisburg) and follow directions above.
From Reading:
Take Rte 61 north, (cross I-78) to Rte 895 east. Turn right and go about 2 miles to a Hawk Mountain sign and turn right, cross the RR tracks and Little Schuylkill River and go 2 miles to the Sanctuary at the top of the mountain.
From points west:
Take I-78 east (towards Allentown) to Rte 61 north, and following directions above.
From Philadelphia and Central New Jersey:
Take Rte 55 south and exit on US 40 westbound / exit 39 (near Malaga) . West of Elmer, at the Pole Tavern circle, US 40 intersects with Rte 77 (there is a WAWA and gas stations here). Take Rte 77 south for 5 miles to Grier's Lane on the left. Continuing on Rte 77, the next left is Olivet Lane.
A short cut - heading south on Rte 55, take exit 48 / Rte 641 / Ellis Mill Road west to Rte 77. Turn left / south on Rte 77 to the Pole Tavern circle (about 3 /12 miles) and following the directions above.
From Delaware Memorial Bridge:
Take Rte 40 east to Rte 77 at the circle Pole Tavern and go south on Rte 77 for 5 miles to Grier's Lane.
From South Jersey:
Take Rte 49 west to Bridgeton and go right / north on Rte 77 north to Johnson Sod Farm on right side after Olivet Lane. The next right is Grier's Lane.

Cape May Point State Park Hawk Watch, NJ
To reach the Cape May Hawk Watch, take the Garden State Parkway south to the end. Continue straight on Route 109 at the end of the Parkway. This road becomes Lafayette Street after you cross the bridge over the canal. Go about 2 miles and bear right onto Perry Street In about 0.4 miles you will come to the traffic light at Broadway and Sunset. Continue straight ahead on Sunset for 1.7 miles to Lighthouse Avenue. Turn left onto Lighthouse Avenue and go 0.7 miles to entrance for the Lighthouse and the State Park on your left. The hawk watch platform is at the far end of the parking lot.

From the north:
Take the Garden State Parkway south and go west on Rte 109, which turns into Rte 9 and turn left / south on Rte 626 (Seashore Road). Cross the Cape May Canal and take the first right (west) onto New England Road. Cross Bayshore Road (Rte 607) and continue to the end.

heading south on Rte 9 turn onto Rte 626 south (Seashore Road) and follow directions as above.
There are two parking areas on New England Road. One is at the end of the road and the other is on the south side about 200 yards before the end of the road. Do not park on the sides of New England Road. There is also another parking area, which is reached by turning right at the end of the road, onto the dirt track, which leads past the dike to the canal, where there is parking.

From the intersections of Routes 70 & 72 in New Jersey, go east on Route 72 for approximately 14 miles.
Turn right on Route 539 and go approximately 14 miles to Route 9.
When you reach Route 9, make a right, cross a causeway, then immediately bear left onto Great Bay Boulevard, also known as "Seven Bridges Road". Follow it all the way to the end.

From Philadelphia
Go west on PA Route 3 (West Chester Pike) to Route 252 in Newtown Square. This intersection is 5.8 miles west of the intersection of Route 3 with US Route 1, and 3.1 miles west of the Route 3 exit on the Blue Route (I-476). From the intersection of Routes 3 and 252, continue west 1 more light to the Getty station and turn left (south) onto Bishop Hollow Road. Follow Bishop Hollow Rd. about 1.8 miles to Gradyville Road and turn right (west). After 0.9 miles from this last intersection you will cross Providence Rd. Continue another 0.6 miles to the concrete bridge over Ridley Creek. Pull off the road and park here, or continue west another few hundred feet where there is space for another few cars.
East Park Reservoir, Philadelphia PA
East Park Reservoir is about three miles east of center city Philadelphia.
From the north or NE Phila: come south on Rt. 1 (Roosevelt Blvd) to Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expy) and go east on 76 a mile or two to Exit 342 Girard Avenue. At the light at Girard Ave., turn left and immediately go across the bridge over the Schuylkill. Then turn LEFT at the light onto 33rd Street (you may see a sign for Poplar St off on the right). Follow this less than a mile or so to its intersection with Oxford St. Turn left at this intersection (of 33rd and Oxford). Go a short distance into the park and then take the first right. This brings you quickly to a small parking area where we'll meet at 7:30 am.
From the west, take Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Exwy) to exit 342 Girard Avenue and proceed as above.
From the east, one can take Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expwy) to exit 342 Girard Avenue. At the end of the ramp, turn right and go a short distance to the traffic light (Girard Ave). Here turn right and cross the Schulykill River on Girard, and proceed as above.
From center city Phila., one can also take the West River Drive from the Art Museum area to the light at Sweetbriar Drive and turn left. Go just 100 yards to the light at South Concourse Drive. Here turn left one block to Girard Avenue. Turn left there and immediately cross the Schuylkill River and then turn left at the light onto 33rd Street, proceeding as above to the reservoir.
Brigantine (Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge at Brigantine), NJ
Just east of Oceanville in Atlantic County
Directions:
From Philadelphia
Take Atlantic City Expressway to the Garden State Parkway (GSP) North Exit 7.
Head North on GSP to the service area at Mile 41.
Drive into the service area and out the back (north end) following the signs for Jim Leeds Road.
This is a short access road, from which you’ll turn right onto Jim Leeds Road
Go 0.4 miles and bear left at the fork onto Great Creek Road.
Go 3.1 miles to Rte 9. Cross Rte 9 and proceed to the parking lot inside the NWRFrom Southern New Jersey
Take the GSP to the service area at Mile 41 and follow the above directionsFrom Northern New Jersey
Take the GSP south to Exit 48 (Rte 9 South)
Go south on Rte 9 for 6 miles to Great Creek Road in Oceanville.

From PA : Take the turnpike to the end at the Delaware River. Cross the bridge onto the NJ Turnpike. Take the Rte 130 exit and take 130N Bordentown. Stay in the right lane and go to the first light (1/2 mile). Take the jug handle onto Delaware Ave ( it will turn into Front Street). Go 1 miles to Clark T. Carey Memorial Park entrance on your right.

Forrest Lane Bent Grass Sod Farms, Salem County NJ
This is a spot well worth checking out from mid-August to mid-September for “grasspipers”, along with the DeLea Sod Farm just to the southeast and in conjunction with the Johnson Sod Farm some 12 miles south east of here. It is located in Salem County just north west of Sharptown and Cowtown on Rte 40.

Heading west from Sharptown on Rte 40, once past Cowtown, you will see the Salem County Fair Grounds on your right. Check the sod fields (DeLea Farm) to the west of here and between Till Road and Pointers-Auburn Road, both north and south of Rte 40. There is enough room to pull over on the hard shoulder, though be careful because the road is busy.
Continue west, crossing over Pointers-Auburn Road to the junction of Rte 40 & Rte 48. Here you will see a jug handle for Forrest Lane. Take it and soon you see the bent grass (this is the grass used for golf greens and tees) sod fields on the south side of Forrest Lane. Do not park on the grass; though be mindful of the residents and workers that use this small but well traveled road.Baird’s Sandpipers and Buff-breasted Sandpipers were seen in 2004.
HIDDEN VALLEY BANDING STATION in SCHUYKILL COUNTY, PA:
From Phila:
Head North on Rte 309 or the PA Turnpike to the Allentown / Lehigh Valley Exit 56.
Take I-78 West (towards Harrisburg) to exit 19 (Rt. 183), turning right onto 183 North. Drive about eight miles, over the Blue Mountain and eventually to the intersection with Rt. 443. Make a left onto 443 West and go three miles to the village of Friedensburg. Just past the Friedensburg Country Restaurant, turn right onto Church Rd. (unmarked), making an immediate right at the stop sign. Go .8 miles to Sweet Arrow Lake Rd., make a right at the golf course sign, and make an immediate left onto Hidden Valley Rd. Go .5 mile over a short hill, then make a left onto Panther Valley Rd. Go .4 mile and turn right onto Chateau Rd., a dirt lane at the far edge of the woods. The banding station is at the end of the lane. If there is a cable gate across the lane, move it, come in and then replace it.
DOBSON SCHOOL, Manayunk, Philadelphia County PA
Directions for the 2004 Chimney Swift Field Trip
Meet at the Dobson School on Umbria Street and Hermitage Lane in Manayunk at 7:00 PM (do not be late, you may miss it) to witness this annual spectacle as they gather at this time of the year, getting ready to migrate south eventually heading for South America and Peru. Parking is limited; carpooling is advisable. Best viewing is from SMICK ST, which runs parallel with UMBRIA. Park on Hermitage and walk up the hill to Smick Street.
Heading south on Ridge Ave turn Right (South or West) on Parker Avenue just before you get into Roxborough. Turn left on Umbria and go about 4 blocks to Umbria & Hermitage. The school is on the left about 6 blocks before the Green Lane Bridge. You can park on Umbria or on the street up the hill (Hermitage) just past the school. The swifts do all go into that one chimney on top of the school!
On Sept 16, 2003 sunset was at 7:08PM, we viewed them from Smick Street, which runs parallel to Umbria.
It looked as though the birds started to gather around 7PM, just before sunset. By about 7:10 the numbers began to build eventually getting into the thousands, with constant chattering. By 7:20 there was an estimated 5000+ (could well have been more). They flew in an anti-clockwise direction anywhere from chimney top level to some 150 feet above that, and occasionally thinking /practicing funneling into the chimney, while some may well have entered, the bulk of them were circling at amazing speed around their track. At about 7:25 they began to drop in, fluttering down in a small vortex, probably about 10% of those trying entered, while the others banked away and continued on their track around again. The whole process took about 10 minutes.
Once the show is over maybe you would like to head to the Manayunk Brewing Co. at 4120 Main Street. Directions: Follow Umbria several blocks to the east. At the light turn right. At the next light turn left onto Main Street. Go to the other end of Manayunk, and it is on your right.
SHAWMONT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, Roxborough, Philadelphia PA
Directions to Chimney Swift roost at Shawmont School (Shawmont Avenue & Eva Streets in Roxborough)
Heading south from Andorra on Ridge Avenue, turn right (west) on Shawmont Avenue and proceed to Eva Street. The school is on the southwest corner Shawmont & Eva.
There is a large parking lot from which to view the chimney.Note: This is about a ½ mile south of the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education and Upper Roxborough Reservoir.
Barnegat Light is at the northern end of Long Beach Island in Ocean County, New Jersey
From the Garden State Parkway:
Take Exit 63 and go East on Rte 72 (across Rte 9 and through Manahawkin) for about 7 miles, crossing the bridge to Long Beach Island.
At the 3rd light after crossing the bridge, turn left (North) onto Long beach Blvd.
Follow the road for about 8 miles until you see the Lighthouse, in the town of Barnegat Light. (Obey the speed limit along here, as speed taps are common.)
At 8th Street bear left onto Broadway and continue about 4 blocks.
Just before the end of the road turn right into the Barnegat Light State Park car park. (Fee in effect only during the summer).Walk towards the Lighthouse, past the restrooms and bear left at the Lighthouse. The jetty begins here and stretches about 1 mile to the east, on the southern side of the Barnegat Inlet (Island Beach State Park is on the northern side). After several hundred yards the concrete walkway gives way to the jetty. Be careful walking on this as it can be slippery and has gaps between the boulders and slight changes in elevation, though it is relatively flat. One can also walk on the sand besides the jetty on the south side, until you reach the ocean.
TULLYTOWN DUMP / FRANKLIN COVE & FALLS TOWNSHIP PARK, BUCKS COUNTY
Meeting place: The Super WAWA on Rte 13 at the corner of Green Lane.
From the PA Turnpike, take the Bristol Exit (this is the last exit before reaching the end of the turnpike at the Delaware River Bridge and the 1st exit right after crossing into PA if you are coming from the NJ Turnpike) and go north on Rte 13. It is at the first light.TULLYTOWN DUMP / FRANKLIN COVE
The road closest to the dump is off limits, but one can view the dump from the end of River Road.
From the Super WAWA head southeast on Green Lane till you come to the Radcliffe Street in Bristol. Turn left (North) and head along the river. You will go under the PA Turnpike Bridge. Stop here and check the steel girders for the resident Peregrine). Continue north, past the Riverside Industrial Complex on your right and into Tullytown. You are now on Main Street (Old Bristol Pike). At the first light, turn right onto River Road. Follow this straight and go over the narrow bridge into a maintenance / landscape construction complex. Franklin Cove (which is now between you and the dump) and the dump can be viewed from behind the building in front of you.FALLS TOWNSHIP PARK
Go back along River Road to the light at Main Street. Cross over main Street, taking Falsington Road (it is the one at 1 O’clock) and continue over the railroad tracks. Take your first right onto Bristol Pike (not marked) and continue heading north for about a mile and a half, past Mill Creek Road (on your left) to Wheatsheaf Road. Darby O’Gill’s Tavern is on the northwest corner. Turn left on Wheatsheaf. Go 2/10th of a mile to an entrance (not marked, though it is obvious) on your left. A large pond will be in front of you with access and parking to your left.Alternate directions: Take Rte 13 to the Mill Creek Road exit and go east on Mill Creek Road to the main Falls Township Park entrance on your left. Follow the road around until you come to the main pond.
POND on WHEATSHEAF ROAD
Though you are not allowed to park along Wheatsheaf Road, or for that matter trespass on the slight berm that is along the road, you can scope the large body of water to the north east of Wheatsheaf Road easily from the road. Leave you vehicle in the Falls Township Park (near the Wheatsheaf Road entrance) and walk across the road.
If you continue northwest on Wheatsheaf you come to the intersection with Penn Valley Road. There are 2 other ponds on the north side of Penn Valley Road, one right in front of you and the other west of Rte 13. Lots of No Trespassing / No Stopping signs here, so probably best to walk from Falls Township Park
Directions: Riverwinds is less than a mile from Interstate 295 in West Deptford, NJ.
From I-295 travelling south, take exit 21. At the traffic light at the bottom of the exit ramp, turn right onto Route 44 (Crown Point Road). At the next traffic light, Delaware Street (Wawa on your left), make a left turn. Follow Delaware Street straight thru the next traffic light, crossing Grove Road, onto Riverwinds Drive and straight into the riverwinds development. Shortly you will find a sign and parking area on your right for the "Scenic Trail". Park here. This is where we will meet.
From I-295 travelling north, take exit 21 and make a left at the bottom of the exit ramp onto Delaware Street. Follow Delaware Street straight thru the next traffic light, crossing Grove Road, onto Riverwinds Drive into the development. Find the parking lot shortly ahead on your right. Park here. This is our meeting spot

South of Pedricktown in Salem County
This is a great place for shorebirds in spring (mid April- early June), including White-rumped and Pectoral Sandpiper
Directions:
From Rte 130 just north of Pedricktown, turn south on CR602 Pedricktown-Woodstown Road and head through Pedricktown
After several miles you will go over Rte 295.
Just after Rte 295 on the east side is Chapter One Farm.

Take Valley Forge exit
Follow signs to Rte 422 North / West
Cross the Schuykill River and take the first exit onto Rte 363 / Trooper Road (north / east) – only way you can go!
Immediately you’ll come to a light at Audubon Road. Turn left onto Audubon Road and follow this to the light at Pawlings Road.
The entrance to Mill Grove / Aududon Wildlife Sanctuary will be directly in front of you.
Cross Pawlings Road and drive into the Sanctuary.
Park at the last parking lot (on your right) before the Audubon House
Directions from Philadelphia : Take I-95 south to the Commodore Barry Bridge. Go south on rte. 130 for approx. 2.7 miles. Go left on Center Square Rd. The RR Tracks are only a short distance. Go an additional 1.7 miles on Center Square Rd. to reach Pedricktown Rd. Make a right, and park on the right shoulder just before the causeway.
From the southern intersection of Rts. 322 and 47, head south on Rt. 47 for 7/10 of a mile to the gas station on your left. Turn left onto Lincoln

Take the PA Turnpike west to Exit 286
Continue straight (past the exit for Rte 222) for 1 mile to Rte 272 North (N. Reading Road)
Turn right on Rte 272 North and go about 1.2 miles (past Reningers) to the light at Rte 897
Turn left onto Rte 897 and go approx. 11.5 miles to the stop sign in the village of Kleinfeltsville
Take the next left after the stop sign (approx 1/10th of a mile) onto Hopeland Road
Follow the road approx 2 miles to the Middle Creek Visitors center on the right side of the road, just after the small causeway that has the main reservoir on the east side and a small pond on the west side.
FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT PARK, Philadelphia County, PA
Located on Pattison Avenue at Broad Street, just west of the stadiums in South Philadelphia. From Rte 95, take exit #17 and go north on Broad Street. Follow signs to turn left onto Pattison Avenue West. Turn left into the Park and follow the one-way loop road to the parking lot (just after the bridge) on the south side of the main lake.
OKEHOCKING PRESERVE, Chester County, PA
From Rte 476 (the Blue Route), take the exit for Newtown Square / Rte 3 (West Chester Pike).
Follow Rte 3 west. Go through the lights at Providence Road and then Delchester Road.
The Preserve entrance and parking lot is on the right, ½ mile beyond (west of) the Rte 3 intersection with Delchester Road.
